Abstract

This was an exploratory study to determine need of standardization of Denver Developmental Screening Test in Korea. Currently changing trends of child health care is demand total :health assessment of child including physical growth and psychological development. A simple evaluative tool of child development as a primary use of data gathering in nursing process is urgently required in nature.
A review of literature in Korea revealed many studies on physical. growth and bone age but not much on development of children. A few studies were under taken in an attempt to establish the range of normal mental development of Korean children. However, Main Objective of those study was to determine developmental Quotient. Also, tools used for gathering data were very complicated in use and interpretation.
Denver Developmental Screening Test was aimed to obtain normative data of development of infants and preschool children. It is made up of 105 test items that to meet the need of having a simple, clinically useful tool to assist in the early detection of children with serious developmental delays. The test has been developed for use by people who. have not had training in psychological test; it was simple to administer and interpret. The test is not designed to derive a developmental or mental age, nor a development or intelligence quotient. It is to be used only to alert professional child workers to the possibility of developmental delays so that appropriate diagnostic studies may be pursued. The author thought that DDST is very convenient and useful tool for child health workers in Korea and decided to explore its need of standardization in Korea.
Main objective of this study was to have general idea of child development in Korea and to compare with norm of Denver. Another objective of this study was to determine if there were significant developmental differences among various segments of the sample such as those due to urban and rural area.
The sample in this study were 505. healthy children living in a city and, a rural area. ¢¥The children between the years of two weeks and 6years were tested by DDST to determine normal range of development. Manual of DDST translated in Korean was used to collect data of this study.
The age at which 25 %, 50 %, 75 %, and 90 % of children passed each item were calculated for the entire sample. Also, norms were calculated for urban and rural children.
Results of the study were compared with norms of Dever and other related previous. studies in Korea. There were few marked differences between the ages at which Korean and American children can perform the individual test items.
1. Gross motor and fine motor and adaptive development of Korean children has no significant difference.
2. One of the significant feature of development was that Korean children perform many number of personal-social development items at an earlier age than children of Denver children.
3. On the same time administering DDST for this study, few items had identified to be, modified, such as "use plurals".
On the basis of the study, the author would like to suggest of direction for research in the area developmental norms of Korean children.
1.A study with a larger sample of children drawn from a wider selection of occupations, ages and geographic locations.
2. A study to determine cross validity with other developmental tests and intelligent tests.
3. A longitudinal study is needed to verify these findings.
